Random Round of Inspiration March 12, 2008

Lou Rhodes

Okay so this a a post I’d like to write weekly to keep things alive over here. In the RRIs we’ll try to include as much sources of inspiration we’ve gathered over the week. These sources can come from anywhere at all. As designers we’re inspirable by anything we might encounter, so here are their web counterparts.

Bunraku

Bunraku
Okay so this and last week have been extremely busy for us, yet I found some time to do some fun stuff with the better half and I’ll discuss a few internet quickies. To start off: Bunraku. I visited a Bunraku performance in the Muziekgebouw Aan ‘t Ij in Amsterdam the other night. Being a Tokyoite wannabe, I try to visit anything Japanese because the damn place is on the other side of the world. In Tokyo we had the opportunity to visit a traditional Kabuki performance at the Kabuki-Za, which was great. Bunraku was very similar, only the lyrics were much more poetic and the actors were replaced by life-sized puppets.

I’ve been enchanted by Miss Rhodes‘ voice since she was still a part of acid-jazz triphop legend Lamb. Since their breakup, several members have been trying to launch a solo career. Lou was in Amsterdam this weekend with ex-lamb live guitarist Onnur to present their new work. Her second album, Bloom, is a gorgeous folk masterpiece, but unlike her first album, Beloved One, much more layered and I love the added percussion. The performance in Paradiso last Sunday was intimate, beautiful and very calming. The following clips were made during the performance this Sunday (not by us though). She even sang the Lamb hit record ‘Gabriel’ a capella. Fantastic.

AisleOne and the Serif
AisleOne, a graphic design blog edited by Antonio Carusone focuses on grid systems and typography. Like The Serif, which focuses more on graphic design in general, AisleOne has become one of my everyday feeds to check out what others are doing. Carusone’s interviews are especially worth reading.

I’ll leave you with these, more to come in a while. Cheers.
